»The possibility of a chaste marriage, inspired by the unconsummated marriage of Mary and Joseph, allowed medieval hagiography to model a rare category of person: the married virgin. This paper examines lives of married virgin martyrs, considering what violence they suffer not just from their killers, but also their husbands.«
